Emergency indoor flooding can cause damage to a host of indoor furnishings including expensive mattresses. But what is a homeowner to do when he cannot purchase yet a new one, and has to make do with one that has been wet due to indoor flooding?

SF Gate says drying up a mattress is possible. In fact, it relayed in its website step-by-step instructions on how to swiftly dry a wet mattress.

“Blot up the moisture if the spill or wet area was minor and small. Use a clean, absorbent cloth or towel and apply as much pressure as possible to force the moisture out of the mattress, into the drying pad. Follow with a hairdryer, set on high. Hold the hairdryer a few inches from the mattress surface and apply heat for at least 15 to 20 minutes. Allow the area to cool down completely before determining if it is dry or not. After 30 minutes, proceed to another drying method.”

Bedperfect.com also came up with tips on how to deal with wet mattresses, particularly those that have been subjected to indoor flooding from a clean water source. Read more here 

“The first step would naturally be to determine the extent of the damage by the water. For starters, it is advisable to remove any sheet from the mattress and examine your mattress. If your mattress has a waterproof cover, then you are in luck if not you have quite some work to do.”

The Alabama Cooperative Extensions System meanwhile shared how homeowners should deal with a water damaged spring mattress. “A good innerspring mattress should be sent to a commercial renovating company. Renovation is too difficult to do at home. Ask about the cost of the work. It may be less expensive to buy a good reconditioned or new mattress.”
